Converting sheet music to MIDI used to be a long, manual task that required the manual input every note of a piece into music software. With PlayScore 2, it’s possible to convert PDF to MIDI, and convert paper music scores into MIDI accurately in a matter of minutes.
MIDI is short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is an electronic code that allows computers, instruments and hardware to communicate. MIDI is the instructions that tell electronic devices the parameters of notes, i.e. what, where and when they should occur.
Sheet Music to MIDI Converter
PlayScore 2 works as a sheet music to MIDI converter. This means you can scan sheet music or PDF and digitize your files.
To convert score to MIDI you will need to scan a photo of sheet music into the PlayScore 2 app on your phone or tablet. When you open the app you will see the document screen home page. Tap on ‘take a photo of a page to play’ in the bottom right corner. This will open the camera on your device, and will provide you with tips on taking the best photo of your sheet music.
Convert Sheet music to MIDI
The free version of PlayScore 2 does not have the option to convert sheet music to MIDI or other formats so you will need to upgrade. There are two levels of subscription: The ‘Productivity’ subscription lets you capture and play multiple pages of paper music and export as MIDI. Once you have the subscription, you can take more photos of additional pages by selecting ‘take a photo of a page to play’ again as many times as you wish, adding to your piece.
If you are converting PDF to MIDI, you will need the ‘Professional’ subscription option, which lets you work with multiple pages and convert to MIDI and MusicXML formats. To get started, simply select ‘import sheet music or a PlayScore document’ and select your PDF from your files.
Convert PDF to MIDI
Alternatively you can convert PDF to MIDI by viewing your score in a website URL, and then sending the PDF to PlayScore 2 by tapping the ‘share’ icon from the web page, and choosing PlayScore 2 from your device’s options.
The PDF will open and PlayScore 2 will ask you to select which pages you want to convert to MIDI by tapping on the blue areas above and below the page corners that you’d like to include.
Now you should have your music in PlayScore 2 whether you scanned scores from paper or PDF. To finish converting to MIDI, you will need to save your file in MIDI format by tapping the ‘share’ icon and selecting ‘Save as MIDI’.
You now have the option of saving the MIDI to your files, or sending it via email or other apps. Your converted sheet music is now a MIDI file that can be opened in other music software, hardware and devices that understand MIDI language thanks to the speed and ease of utilising PlayScore 2 as a sheet music to MIDI converter.
